How the Motability Scheme Works

If you receive the Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance or the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement, getting a new car is easier and more affordable than ever. Through Motability, you can turn part or all of your allowance into the car of your choice.

Here at Greyhound Ford we work closely with Motability across a variety of schemes. Through these, we are able to offer a range of vehicles across 9 different brands, to find the vehicle to suit your needs and increase your mobility. We have dedicated motability specialists, qualified to offer you advice and guidance on the car that best suits your needs. All Our Sales Staff are Motability Trained Specialists

The only condition is that you have at least 12 months award remaining. There are no credit checks or other restrictions. There are options to buy new or used vehicles, but the most popular scheme is the Motability 3 year Contract Hire.

Even if you do not drive, you can still obtain a vehicle and choose up to two other people to drive for you. If you are a parent or carer to a child who receives the allowance, you can apply too. If you are a relative or carer to someone who claims the allowance (recognised by the DWP as an appointee), you can apply on their behalf.

The only condition is that the car is used for the benefit of the disabled person. This can involve travelling in the vehicle or a driver running errands for the disabled person.

The benefits of Motability

In addition to having a brand new car there are other benefits too: Included in the Motability Contract Hire, at no extra cost, is a Mileage allowance of 15,000 per year, Road tax, Fully comprehensive insurance for up to two drivers, Full RAC cover, All servicing, warranty work and MOT, Tyres (worn or punctured) will be repaired or replaced and windscreens (that are chipped or cracked) will be repaired or replaced.

As you can see the scheme offers excellent value for money, all this in exchange for your higher rate mobility allowance. Many cars have nothing extra to pay (including some automatics*). On larger or more expensive vehicles an advance payment may also be required. The advance payments start from as little as £50*

If your requirements are more complex or you are not sure what you need there are assessment centres around the country who offer full assessments (there is a charge for this service). You can even get driving lessons/refresher courses for adapted vehicles to help you gain confidence (again at additional cost).
